Description

A “Nambutekki” cast iron kettle, designed by Yoshitaka Nakamura, which received the “Good Design Award 2012.”
* This product must be used only for “water boiling.”

Itchu-Do Nambutekki
Nambutekki is an authorized Japanese Traditional Craft from Iwate Prefecture, and it has a 900-year-old history.  It has a simple, but heart-warming appearance, and the longer you use it, the more refinement you will feel from it.

The outside surface is applied with lacquer and then baked up, while the inside is kilned in a traditional method to prevent rust.  Through the kilning process, it is baked up in 900-degree-celsius charcoal fire, which creates a thin film of “tri-iron tetra-oxide” which prevents rust.  After boiling water with this kettle, the water will contain “bivalent iron,” which can be easily absorbed into human body and will make perfect iron supplement.

Before you start using it
Rinse the kettle first, pour water in the kettle as much as 80% of the full volume, and boil the water for about 15 minutes.  At first, the water will go “brown” from the iron on the surface, so you should repeat the same process about 3 times until the water stays clear.  Also, you should do this when you want to use the kettle after not using it for a long time.

After you finished using it
After you have finished using the kettle, do NOT leave the water in the kettle, but remove the water from the kettle and dry it completely.

In case the kettle gets rusty…
Rinse the kettle first, and put water in the kettle as much as 80% of the full volume, and then start boiling water with a “tea bag” of black tea inside, for about 15 to 20 minutes.  Just be careful not to boil it without any water inside.  Boiling the water with black tea will cause a chemical reaction of “tannin” and “iron,” which has the effect of removing the rust on the inside surface of the kettle.  Repeating the same process 2 or 3 times will be more effective.  After that, rinse the kettle and boil water 2 times without any tea bags, and it should be fine again.

Cautions
1. The kettle body itself gets really hot while and right after being heated, so please be careful not to burn yourself.
2. Keep your children away from the kettle when in use, as well as when stored.
3. The kettle is heavy, so be careful if you store it somewhere high above your head.
4. When you will not use it for a while, make sure that you have removed all the water on the surface and keep it somewhere dry.
5. Do NOT wash the inside of the kettle.  The anti-rust film on the surface may come out by washing it with a sponge or detergent, which will cause rust.
6. Do NOT pour water more than 80% of the full volume.
7. The fire from the stove should not be too big.  Regulate the stove for the fire to be touching only the bottom, not the side of the body.
8. The water inside may spurt from the spout when the water starts to boil.  You should keep your eye on it and regulate the fire level.
9. Do NOT cool the kettle down rapidly, because it may cause “cracks” or it may actually break.
10. Do NOT use the kettle in a microwave oven, or it will explode.
11. Do NOT use the kettle in a dish washer (washing machine) or a dish dryer.
