Japanese Kitchen (2): Not only Rocky Balboa but also Japanese people eat raw eggs!

“TKG” is too easy to be called a dish.

I sometimes make TKG myself when I don’t feel like cooking or there’s almost no food in my fridge.

TKG stands for “Tamago-Kake-Gohan” in Japanese.

Tamago means “eggs.”

Kake means “to put something on something.”

Gohan means “rice.”

To make TKG, just put a raw egg on a bowl of rice and a little soy sauce on it.

Eating raw eggs is common in Japan and not unusual in our daily lives.

In Japan, most eggs’ “best-before date” is set about two weeks after being packed.

This may be much shorter than that in your country.

Also, we can eat eggs raw because the food hygiene in Japan is controlled thoroughly.

But when eating a raw egg, I still prefer a fresher egg, say, less than three days old.

I have never swallowed a raw egg like Rocky Balboa, though.

*You should check whether you can eat raw eggs safely in your country.

Be careful if you eat eggs raw.
