Just an Ordinary Life in Japan (025): Ohanami (Cherry Blossom Parties)

At this time of the year, what most Japanese people are concerned about is “when” cherry blossoms will start blooming.

We even have “cherry blossoms forecast” on TV, broadcasted along with “weather forecast.”
It announces or predicts in which areas and when cherry blossoms will start blooming or when they will be in full bloom.

The reason why we are so concerned about cherry blossoms is because we have a custom of seeing cherry blossoms called “ohanami.”

“Ohanami” is like a picnic, where we not only enjoy seeing cherry blossoms, but also have parties with friends, families, or co-workers under cherry trees.

Cherry blossoms are not in full bloom for long; they usually last about a week or so.

That is why we don’t want to miss the precious moment!

Unfortunately, this year there are many places where ohanami parties are not allowed because of Covid-19.

But there are also some places which will be open to public for ohanami parties.

According to the cherry blossom forecast, they will be in full bloom on March 29 around Tokyo.

The photos below show a cherry tree near my house as of March 17.

They are blooming a little, but not in full bloom yet.

There are some more cherry trees around my house, so I can’t wait to see them!

I personally have not had parties with my friends ever since this Covid-19 situation started in 2020.

I really wish that we will be able to see a lot of smiles in full bloom under the cherry blossom next year!
